CLIMATE TRANSITION PLAN FUNDAMENTALS
The last few months have made one thing clear: our current systems are failing us. From food security to climate and nature, the evidence is mounting, and the political risk of sustainability has intensified.
With the food industry sitting at the heart of these challenges, it’s on us to lead change – and that starts with clear, actionable climate transition plans.
What is a climate transition plan?
A climate transition plan outlines how a business is adapting its operations, assets and strategy to align with global climate goals – particularly the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C target. In the UK, where net zero by 2050 is a legal requirement, transition plans are already mandatory for many financial institutions and large businesses and are expected to become a requirement for many more.
The Transition Plan Taskforce (TPT) has established a framework underpinned by three guiding principles:
Ambition – A clear, strategic commitment to climate goals
Action – A detailed and collaborative roadmap for delivery
Accountability – Transparent reporting on measurable targets
Why food businesses need to act now
A transition plan isn’t just a compliance exercise – It’s a business-critical tool to prioritise, amplify and accelerate climate action. In an era where sustainability is increasingly linked to brand reputation, investment and supply chain resilience, companies that fail to act risk falling behind.

“A transition plan is not a report, instead it’s a crucial, commercial tool that demonstrates an organisation’s intention, capability and acceptance of responsibility of its role in the shift to a low carbon future.”
